The Thanksgiving Holiday is almost upon us! That means LOTS of travel to family and friends for this special day. Several main highways pass though the Cumberland Valley and our B&Bs provide a Better Way to Stay on the way to Grandma's house!

It you are traveling north from Washington DC, you will perhaps use US Rt 15. Blair Mountain B&B is just the place to stop for a relaxing stay after work and on your way!

If you will be traveling on I-81, we have several Bed & Breakfasts that will provide comfortable, luxurious accommodations to help you prepare for more travels. CUMBERLAND VALLEY BED AND BREAKFAST ASSOCIATION TO HONOR VETS WITH FREE ROOMS ON VETERANS DAY

(Carlisle, PA) – Members of the Cumberland Valley Bed and Breakfast Association will join hundreds of inns and B&Bs throughout the U.S. and Canada in honoring active and retired veterans with free rooms in recognition of Veteran’s Day. In a campaign called B&Bs for Vets, members of the Cumberland Valley Bed and Breakfast Association will join inns and B&Bs in opening their doors with complimentary stays for vets on November 10, 2011 so they can wake up on Veteran’s Day to a wonderful breakfast after a great night’s sleep in a B&B.

This is the second year that the Cumberland Valley B&B Association has participated in this campaign. In addition, this year, some B&Bs have offered additional discounts throughout the week of November 7-12.

“We are proud to join innkeepers across the USA and Canada in honoring active and retired military and veterans by offering a complimentary room(s),” said Joanne Kenney-Hawver, innkeeper at the Red Cardinal Bed & Breakfast and secretary of the Cumberland Valley Bed and Breakfast Association. “We are thrilled that thousands of vets and their families will wake up on 11-11-11 in a B&B, like ours. The B&Bs for Vets program started in 2008 when Kathleen Penek, co-owner of the Gillum House and a handful of other innkeepers in West Virginia opened their doors to veterans in honor of Veteran’s Day. The program grew in popularity among innkeepers, and last year more than 900 inns in the US and Canada participated by offering free rooms to vets. This year, the Professional Association of Innkeepers International will coordinate the B&Bs for Vets program as a way to help veterans learn about today’s B&B experience.

If you want to dress up for Halloween, there is a Halloween party/dance at the Green Door. This is located in downtown Carlisle. There usually is a swing dance lesson from 7:00-8:00 pm and dancing until midnight. Billy and I have danced here many times and it is a lot of fun.

INTERESTING FOLLOW-UP

When I wrote my last blog, I was talking about books. This weekend, one of our delightful guests was Thomas Yezerski. Tom is an author/illustrator of children's books. He was born in Lancaster, PA and now lives in New Jersey. He has been illustrating children's books since the late 1990's. He also has written and illustrated 2 books and is now working on a 3rd. It was coincidental that Tom was here over the weekend when the "Celebrate the Book" festival was happening in downtown Carlisle. We enjoyed his visit and perhaps next year, he might be part of the festival.

BOOKS

Our guests love to read. I would say about 95% of the guests who come to the Red Cardinal B&B bring a book. Nowadays, some come with their ebooks, but for the most part, it is still a paperback or hardback book that is stuffed into their backpack. It is like packing a toothpaste and make-up for the trip. The genre varies from the Bible, mysteries (most popular), history, and biographies. I enjoy talking with the guests about their choice of reading material, as it is always a good way to get a recommendation.

Some of our repeat guests have their favorite places to browse for books when they are in the area. One such place is Canaday's Book Barn which specializes in old and rare books: www.candaysbookbarn.com. Another popular book store is the Whistlestop book store in downtown Carlisle: www.whistlestopbooks.com. The Cumberland County Historical Society is great for research and they have books about local history at their shop "History on High" which is also in downtown Carlisle: www.cchistsoc.org.

When I am looking for a book, I head over to Bosler Memorial Library in downtown Carlisle, or at a yard sale. I can't believe how many voracious readers there are in my area.

This weekend the second annual Friends of Bosler Library "Celebrate the Book! festival will be held on Saturday, 10/22 at 9:00 am. The best-selling author David Baldacci is the guest speaker. The event is filled with other authors, book-signings, activities for children and a round table discussion for potential authors. See www.celebratethebook.org for more information.

CONCIERGE

An innkeeper wears many hats. One such hat is that of "concierge". Many guests who stay with us at the Red Cardinal Bed & Breakfast come for a particular reason: the Carlisle car show, Dickinson College graduation, a wedding or visiting family. Yet their is time in the schedule when the guests want to go off exploring.

Billy and I like to recommend places that we have visited. So today we went off to find Hunters Valley Winery. The winery is located about 25 miles plus or minus from our B&B. It is up Route 34, which is a direct, scenic ride from our location. When we arrived at the winery, we were pleasantly surprised. It sits out on a hill overlooking the Susquehanna River and Valley below.

Although it was rainy and overcast today, the view was lovely. On a clear day, it must be gorgeous.

We spoke with Shirley Hartz and was surprised to learn that the winery has been in operation for 25 years! Shirley has been working there for 24! We sampled a few wines as we chatted and left with 2 red wines - "Mountain Red" and "Concord".

Pheasant Field B&B has a wine and roses package that includes a trip to Hunters Valley Winery.

If you are in town this weekend 10/22 & 10/23, there is an open house and craft fair.

A COUNTRY ROAD

One of the attractions of our bed and breakfast is our location. The Red Cardinal B&B is located on a "country road". Although it is a little over a mile long, it is filled with many interesting neighbors and views that our guests enjoy. Running along side of the is a "mill race". This stream was channeled off the main body of water, the Yellow Breeches Creek, to operate the mill at the head of our street. We have a barn across the street and it provides the guest with a great photo opportunity.

Although the mill is no longer in operation, it is the home and studio of Petra Wirth, one of the premier yoga instructors in the area.

As you continue down Lerew Road, you pass our neighbor's farm. Here they raise beef cattle. The cows provide another great photo opportunity for our "city" guests.

Further along, you pass the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Campbell. This is the home of the "Chimneys Violin Shop". Mr. Campbell is a world renown violin maker and instructor. He has taken in students for years, and when they are finished their apprenticeship, they become certified violin makers, and their skills are in high demand. On a sunny day, you can walk past the "Chimneys" and see the violins drying on the porch. Some of guests have even had the opportunity to have a tour of the shop. On the other side of the street, is "PJ" Heyman. PJ owns and operates the exquisite Village Artisans Gallery in Boiling Springs. Every item that she sells in her shop is a work of art. Check out: www.villageartisiansgallery.com.

At the end of the road is the Belt Farm. Our friend and neighbor, Patrick Belt has the sweetest corn at the end of summer. Several years ago, he worked with South Middleton Township, to grant an easement along his property so the town could construct a walking trail that connects 2 parks. It is a wonderful extension to the walk along Lerew Road.

Spectacular Weekend

This past weekend, our guests were from Silver Spring MD and Hiram OH. Our guests from Maryland were here to get away and to visit the Apple Festival in Biglerville. They came a day early to sit on the porch and enjoy the warm weather. They also managed to visit Canady's Book Barn, Meadowbrooke Gourds and Children's Lake in Boiling Springs. This was a return visit for them and this year they tried Fiddler's restaurant (at Mayapple), Amy's and Piatto's. They liked all of these restaurants for the different cuisine.

Our guests from Ohio were here for a family reunion in Camp Hill. They were in and out and we got to visit with them over breakfast. They too were delighted with the weather. After breakfast, they managed to stroll around the property and Tom got out his camera for a photo shoot. The favorite subject for all of our guests is our border collie, Mollie.

Billy and I had a great weekend with our guests and are complimented when they hesitate to leave.

APPLE FESTIVAL

This weekend is the Apple Festival in Biglerville. The event runs from 10-4 on Saturday and Sunday. Billy and I have enjoyed going each year. There are crafts, music, hay rides and plenty of food. The array of apple dishes includes dumplings, pies and ice cream. It is a short ride from one of our B&Bs to the festival. The weather looks great for the weekend, so why not come and be our guest. This weekend is the traditional last hoopla of the summer. The Bed & Breakfasts of the Cumberland Valley are ready to help you celebrate the end of the season.

Corvettes at Carlisle

Over 400 Corvettes will line downtown in what has become the largest Corvette Parade in America.

The parade will form at the fairgrounds at 6 pm. The parade will start at 6:30 pm from Gate 1. Thousands of spectators will line downtown to watch this show of American performance. Cars will park between South St. and North St. on North and South Hanover St in downtown Carlisle.

Hanover Street will close to traffic on Saturday, August 27th at 6:45 pm and reopen to traffic after 10 pm.

The downtown main streets are closed to vehicular traffic and transformed into a huge street fair, rated the best one-day festival in Pennsylvania by the Pennsylvania Festivals Association, for the day. Crafts, an antique car show, food booths, entertainment, and children's activities offer something for everyone. There are more than 300 crafts and antique vendors, selected by jury. Food booths feature corn in every available form. Entertainers perform all day at three sites throughout the festival and there are a variety of strolling acts and demonstrations. All events at the Festival are free, so bring the family for a day of fun, arts and crafts.

Kayak - Michaux State Forest, PA

Sunday, June 19 - Long Pine Reservoir Two sessions to choose from: 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm or 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm Novice as well as experienced paddlers are welcome to participate in a relaxed 1.5 hour exploration of this quiet reservoir located in Michaux State Forest near Caledonia State Park. This peaceful, 155 acre lake has approximately three miles of shoreline, most of which is mixed hardwood and pine forest. While small electric motor boats are permitted, canoes and kayaks are more typical. Fishing and hiking are also available at Long Pine Run Reservoir. Kayak program participants meet Kings Gap staff at the lake. Single kayaks, paddles and life vests are provided. Basic instruction and safety procedures will be reviewed before launching. Please be aware of these safety restrictions when registering: * Participants must be 12 years or older, and able to swim. * Each participant age 12-18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. * 300 lb. weight limit for kayaks. The Cumberland County Historical Society presents From Fiber to Fashion: The Fabric of Early Cumberland County,a free exhibit open to the public. Biographies of a local weaver, spinner, tailor ad merchant illustrate interactions with fellow county residents from 1750-1820 as well as with merchants from Pennsylvania and Europe. Based on the popular book, Cloth and Costume 1750 to 1800, the exhibit features textiles referenced in this publication as well as artifacts from the CCHS collection, other museums and private collectors.

June 3-5 2011

The Downtown Carlisle Association announced today that over 200 Fords have pre-registered for the new Ford Nationals Parade and Street Party in Downtown Carlisle. Scheduled for Saturday, June 4 at 6:45 pm, the Ford Parade will be similar to the internationally known Corvette Parade held in Carlisle every August where participants from the auto show will parade their custom and restored vehicles into downtown where they will park and enjoy the evening of live music, dining, and shopping. The parade is sponsored by the Downtown Carlisle Association, LoveCarlisle.com, Carlisle Events, F&M Trust and the Carlisle Theater.

Highlights of the Parade will include Ford NASCAR racing teams, Ford Concept cars, a large selection of Pinto Collectors called the "Pinto Stampede", and a host of period police cars from the Mayberry PD of the famed Andy Griffith Show. Live entertainment is scheduled for the corner of West High and Pitt Street and the blues band Octavia will perform on the steps of the new courthouse.

The Carlisle Theater will show a special screening of the classic movie BULLITT, staring Steve McQueen. The movie, set in San Francisco, was a key part in making the Ford Mustang the classic car it is today. Bullitt starts at 8 p.m. and costs $6 per person. Tickets can be purchased at the Ford Parade sign up tent at the Ford Nationals show or at the Carlisle Theater the day of the show.

Anyone can register for the parade who has a Ford without advertising. Cost to participate is $10 online at www.carsatcarlisle.com or $15 if you sign up at the show. Show guests can sign up at the Ford Parade Tent next to the Goody Bag Garage. Al l proceeds from the show go to production expenses and Downtown Carlisle Association marketing expenses.

Many downtown businesses will be open late and offering free entertainment. The Comfort Suites will be offering a Buffet starting at 5 pm with a Tossed Salad, Chicken Picatta, Beef Pot Roast and assorted sides and desserts for $18.95, plus tax and gratuity. Reservations can be made at 717-960-1000.

The vehicles will form outside of the Carlisle Fairgrounds and parade to downtown using Spring Garden Road, then Clay Street then onto North Hanover. Once in downtown, the vehicles will be parked on Hanover from South Street to North Street, and on High Street from West to Bedford Street. The event will end at 10 p.m. and streets should be opened to the public by 10:30 p.m.

Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet's Founding Artistic Director Marcia Dale Weary is pleased to present No Place Like Home. This annual production is CPYB's way of giving back to the community for 55 years of support.

In Chambersburg beginning on Friday April 29th, THE WAKING GIANT INDEPENDENT FILM FESTIVAL will be offered at the Capitol Theatre. Waking Giant will feature the 1999 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize Winning Documentary Film “American Movie” by Independent Filmmaker Mark Borchardt as well as the anticipated premiere of the short film “Singapore” written and directed by Chambersburg’s own up-and-coming filmmaker Christopher Watson. You can stay at one of two lovely B&Bs in the Chambersburg area: Craig Victorian B&B or the Inn at Ragged Edge. The friendly innkeepers at these B&Bs will be happy to give you directions to the theatre and help you find a nice restaurant in the area.

Moving north up the valley, at Pine Grove Furnace State Park, you can learn all about the Iron Furnace, its founder, and the 130+ year history of the iron forge. On Friday, April 29th, local historian Bill Engle will tell stories of the owners and the workers of the furnace. While you are in the park, take a hike around the lake! Nearby B&Bs include Field & Pine B&B (717-776-7179) and Pine Tree Inn B&B.

In Carlisle, there will be lots of cars, lots of car parts, and lots of car enthusiasts as the Spring Carlisle Collector Car Show begins the car show season. Check availability at some of the Carlisle area B&Bs.

Nearby, at Roundtop Mountain Resort, enjoy a ZIP line during the day and Live Entertainment in the evening! Gelinas Manor B&B or Blair Mountain B&B are your choices for a great B&B stay and help with directions to the resort.

Spring has arrived in the beautiful Cumberland Valley! There are lots of things to see, do, and learn that will give you great memories take home with you!

There is a special exhibit called "Attic Treasures" at the Mechanicsburg Museum. Come see some of those wonderful classic items you may remember from Grandma's house or Great-grandpa's barn. Learn more about how those items were used and where they were made.
On Thursday, April 11th (6:30 to 9 PM) there will be a Mechanicsburg version of Antiques Roadshow with the "Antiques Show & Tell Appraisal" at the Passenger Station. Bring your "treasures" and Richard Murry, of Elmer Murry Auctions, and several other appraisers will evaluate your items. There is a $5.00 charge per item with a limit of 2 items per person.

Traveling south through the valley, you can stop at Pine Grove Furnace State Park. On April 16th, the Camp Michaux Walking Tour will teach you about the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp and the Prisoner of War Interrogation Camp (from WW II). The state park will be beautiful for any kind of hike with wildflowers springing up to brighten your day.

April 15th is the kick-off for "Civil War 150" in Cumberland County. Friday evening will feature a Documentary Film Festival at the Carlisle Theatre. The short films will focus on the impact of the Civil War on ordinary Americans and how it reshaped small communities such as Carlisle.
